Today while I was cruising along on my bike, I had the great idea of heading east to Lake St. Clair. It was a beautiful day, and a nice visit to the lake felt like a refreshing idea. You would think cruising along on the interstate at 80MPH would cool you down from the wind, but no…the wind felt like invisible lava scorching every part of my exposed body.

Thirty minutes later, exit signs for St. Clair Shores show up, and I’m happy to get off the freeway and go for a calming swim in a beautiful lake.

NOT A CHANCE

Driving up and down the edge of the lake, looking for either a beach or just somewhere close by to park my bike and walk along the lake, I noticed something. The entirety of the lake is encircled by houses, private residential parks, yacht clubs, or fences.

Long story short, unless you owned a house on the lake front, you weren’t allowed in the lake. Period.

In going up and down winding Jefferson Ave/Lakeshore Drive, I saw three parks — each of which was either a private club, or a “Residents Only” park.

The best part? The one 50 foot stretch of emptiness that actually allowed you to get to the edge of the lake was literally marked off as “Private Property”. Yeah, there’s nothing here at all, but you’re still not allowed to go there…..

Is this city serious? Is it just me, or does it feel like St. Clair Shores is that one kid in kindergarten that always took the toys from the play chest and refused to share with the rest of the class?
